Devices
The tablet you have. A pen that fits it.
LegUp is built for writing by hand, so a tablet with a stylus is best. No special hardware. The web app works today on any tablet.
What works
A pen is best. A finger will do to start.
The buddy reads what your child writes, so the closer it feels to pencil and paper, the better.
Best: tablet and stylus
Writing, circling and sketching feel natural. LegUp uses pen pressure when the tablet and browser report it.
Fine: tablet and finger
Some activities work well with touch. It’s an easy way to try LegUp before you buy a pen.
For a look: any screen
This website and its demos work on a phone or computer. The app itself is made for a tablet.
Where to get it
Open the web app today.
Use the web app on any tablet. Our Android app is in closed testing and an iOS app is planned.
On an Android tablet, get LegUp from Google Play. On an iPad, Chromebook or Fire tablet, use the web app.
Web app
Works now in the browser on any tablet. In most browsers you can add it to your home screen, and the app shows you how.
Android
In closed testing now.
On Google Play for Android tablets.
iPad
A native app is planned. Until then, the web app works on iPad.
Before you buy anything
A five-minute test on your own tablet.
Have your child write for a few minutes while you watch. Neat handwriting doesn’t matter. You’re checking that the setup feels comfortable.
Open and draw
Load the web app. Draw a line, a curve and a few small letters. Look for missing marks or ink that lags behind the pen.
Rest the hand
Let them hold the pen the way they usually do. Check that a resting palm doesn’t add marks or move the page.
Erase and move around
Fix a mark and tap through the activity. Their hand shouldn’t cover the work to reach a button.
Talk to the buddy
The live buddy needs the internet. Tap talk and check you can hear it. Allow the microphone only if you want voice.
Pens and connection
Match the pen to the tablet.
An active stylus has to fit the exact tablet model. A pen that works on one screen may not work on another, even from the same maker. Check the tablet maker’s list and try the two together.
Plan for the internet
Added to your home screen, the app keeps lessons and app files on the tablet. The live buddy and signing in still need a connection.
Let work finish saving
If the app shows a saving warning, reconnect and let it sync. Skip private browsing for everyday learning and don’t clear the browser’s storage.
Questions
What parents ask about devices.
Do I need a special LegUp tablet?
No. Use the tablet you have. Test the screen, browser and pen together rather than going by the model name.
Can we try it without a pen?
Yes. The lesson on our homepage works with a mouse or finger, and so do some activities in the app. For everyday handwriting, a pen is worth it.
The pen isn’t making marks. What now?
Check its charge or pairing and whether it writes in another app on the same tablet. Reopen the activity and try a finger. If a finger works and the pen doesn’t, the pen and browser may not get along.
Which tablet should we buy?
We don’t recommend a model yet, because device testing is still going on. Start with what you have. If you buy a new tablet and pen, check the store’s return terms first.
